DUI Virginia Conviction FR-44 SR-22 Insurance VA Fairfax Richmond Beach Fredericksburg Manassas Lynchburg
What is an FR-44 / Financial Responsibility Insurance – Virginia DUI
An FR-44 is a form of insurance that is purchased from a Virginia licensed insurance company certifying that the driver has purchased liability insurance that meets Virginia’s minimum required coverage limits. The FR-44 provides proof to the Virginia DMV that you are insured. If you cancel your insurance or the insurance company cancels your policy before your Virginia DUI suspension period is over, the company must notify the Virginia DMV that the FR-44 insurance is canceled.
From January 1, 2008, FR-44 financial responsibility certification is required for a Virginia DUI conviction. Prior to this date, SR-22 insurance was required for a Virginia DUI conviction. FR-44 liability insurance coverage limits are double the SR-22 insurance coverage limits:
• Bodily injury / death of one person $50,000
• Bodily injury / death of two or more persons $100,000
• Property damage $40,000
The new FR-44 double minimum coverage requirements apply to persons convicted of a Virginia DUI offense on or after January 1, 2008, as well as persons previously convicted of Virginia DUI offenses that are required to file an SR-22 certification beyond December 31, 2008. The Virginia DMV will suspend the driving privilege of anyone who does not comply with this requirement by filing an FR-44 certification prior to January 1, 2009.
